Nearly 130 New Students Join Texas iSchool

The Texas iSchool is welcoming a class of 125 new master’s students and three new doctoral students in the Fall 2017 semester.

During an orientation session one week before the first day of class, the iSchool’s incoming interim dean, Professor Randolph Bias, encouraged new students to focus on acquiring the skills they need to get a job in two years, but to also focus on the theory that undergirds those skills “so that in 20 years you can get a job that doesn’t exist yet.”

Dr. Gwizdka investigates eye-tracking for adaptive user interfaces

School of Information Assistant Professor Jacek Gwizdka, a co-director of the iSchool’s Information eXperience (IX) Lab, is a principal investigator on a new project called “Eye-Tracking for Adaptive User Interfaces.” The project is being funded by Lockheed Martin Corporation.

Dr. Sholler appointed to Berkeley postdoc

Recent iSchool graduate Dr. Dan Sholler has been appointed to a postdoctoral fellowship with the rOpenSci project at the University of California, Berkeley.

An expert in qualitative research, Dr. Sholler studies digital infrastructure creation, growth and maintenance efforts. 

Law Library Association Honors the Late Karl Gruben

The American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) has awarded the late Karl T. Gruben with its highest honor.

Mr. Gruben, a School of Information alumnus, passed away in November 2016. This summer, he was one of four recipients of the 2017 Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes outstanding, extended and sustained service to law librarianship, the association or for contributions to professional literature.

By winning the award, Mr. Gruben was automatically inducted into the AALL’s Hall of Fame.

Students Place Second in UXPA Competition

The UT iSchool was well-represented at this year’s annual User Experience Professionals Association conference in Toronto. In addition to Dr. Randolph Bias receiving a lifetime achievement award, three iSchool students placed second in a student design competition. The UXPA 2017 Student Design Competition challenged the three students to create a smart assistant for online shopping.

In his final convocation address as dean of the School of Information, Dr. Andrew P. Dillon urged the iSchool’s most recent graduates to seek greatness through daily choices and self-discipline, to speak truth to power, and to follow Ghandi’s advice to be the change they want to see in the world.
